What Causes Hip Pain?

Are you experiencing hip pain? There are a variety of causes that can lead to this kind of pain. Lying on one side for a long time, hip overuse, muscle stiffness, sitting too long in an awkward position can all cause your hips to hurt. A trauma, sprains or strains may also lead to hip pain. However, this kind of pain is more common as you grow older.

Where Is The Hip Pain Located

Sometimes it can be hard to tell where exactly your hip pain is originating. Many doctors find that if the pain is inside the hip or groin, you probably have a problem with the hip joint. Are you experiencing the pain just outside the hip in the upper thigh or buttock area? In this case, you are most likely suffering from problems in the muscles and soft tissues.

What You Can Do

If you are experiencing pain in your hips, there are a few things you can try to relieve some of the pain. Try to avoid putting pressure on your hip. If possible, rest and try to keep the weight off your hip. Do not sit or lie on the side that is giving you problems. Sometimes over-the-counter pain relievers can be effective. If you are experiencing swelling, apply cold packs to your hip. Do not leave them on your hip for longer than 15 minutes, but apply them several times a day. Low impact exercises, such as swimming and stretching, can sometimes help with chronic hip pain from arthritis. A warm bath or shower may also help relieve pain by relaxing stretched muscles.
