What is the Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Fusion Technique?

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Fusion Technique

The Sacroiliac Joint fusion is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The goal of the procedure is to relieve the pain coming from the SI joint. The SI Joint is the joint located between the sacrum and the ilium bones in the pelvis. This joint provides stability for the pelvis and supports the upper body when you stand or walk. The procedure requires a small incision along side of the buttock. Then, the joint is fused and stabilized using an implant across the joint. The procedure offers several benefits including a safe posterior approach, minimally invasive, fast recovery and proven effective results.

What is SI Joint Dysfunction?

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction generally refers to the pain in the sacroiliac joint region that is caused by an abnormal motion in the joint. The abnormal motion can be too much or too little motion due to a lack of support from the ligaments. The SI joint can also be the source of pain for chronic low back pain. The SI Joint pain normally starts because the joint has become inflamed. The pain can be due to hypermobility and hypomobility. In the case of hypermobility, the ligaments that surround the SI Joint may be inflamed due to degeneration or injury. Hypomobility is most often caused by arthritis which causes the bones to rub against one another creating extreme pain and even mobility problems.

Common Symptoms

SI joint disorders can be the cause for low back pain and chronic back pain. The pain may become worse or even sharp while performing certain movements. Typically, the pain is on one side and muscle tightness and tenderness is common. Disturbed sleep patterns and discomfort while sitting for extended periods of time are other symptoms.
